Starting a Podcast

28 11 2006

I've decided to take a shot at doing a podcast on building a new garden at our new house in Chicago.

An episode or two will be up shortly at www.mychicagogarden.com

Coming Soon

27 11 2006

No garden exists. That’s right..no garden. Well, how can I do a podcast on a garden that doesn’t exist?  Because that’s the point of the podcast.  You will be able to follow along as I move from my current home in Northern Kentucky, with its garden, up to the Chicago area with no garden.  Since I have to build a new garden from scratch, it makes for the perfect starting point for a podcast on gardens!

The Chicago area is in Zone 5a. Make sure you know your zone before you take any advice about planting times, growing techniques and the like from this podcast.

For several years now I’ve been part of a resurgence of gardening in the suburban society. Only recently has there been articles in the main stream media about the urban/suburban families wanting to get "back to their roots". Even as a small child in an urban city, I had a garden in the back yard along the brick fence.

Since moving into our first home in 2001, I have increased and improved the small garden in our backyard every year. Our house came with a very small garden that had been roughly cut out of the grass. For the first year or two, the garden sat dormant while we worked on the rest of the house and settled into the area. In 2004 I constructed 8 4×4 raised beds. We then planted our first crop that had a very encouraging harvest. In 2005 and 2006 I doubled the size of the garden.

Soon all that work will be gone. We are picking up our stuff and moving to the Chicago, IL area as soon as we can.  We get to start all over again, and you get to come along and learn with us!

iPod after 4 months

22 11 2006

Well it hasn’t lost it’s luster.  I posted 4 months ago about dropping $400 on a "toy" and wondering if it was going to be worth it or not. Well I can say that I think I have/will get my moneys worth.  I’ve effectively turned off my car radio. I never listen to it anymore…nor do I play any CD’s. I’ve imported *ALL* of my small collections of music CD’s, purchased a couple singles off iTunes and imported all of my Harry Potter audio books for roughly 1200 sound tracks (majority of those are the Harry Potter books).

Every morning I sync the iPod with iTunes and download the latest podcasts for that day.  I have a routine going that seems to serve me well.  My biggest complaint is that I don’t have enough time in the day to listen to all the great podcasts!! Believe it or not I wish my commute to work was longer…of course I’m going to get my wish now that we are moving to Chicago. I’ll probably learn to regret that wish.

The podcasts to which I am currently subscribed in order of preference/listening order:

Daily Podcasts

Weekly Podcasts

Monthly/Occasional Podcasts

Luckily not all the podcasts are daily. Some are even seasonal and I don’t listen to every episode.  I’ve tried to find some podcasts in the Information Security space (my chosen profession) but I found all the ones I tried to be boring, retarded (topics or speaker) or both. The only one that was tolerable was Security Now with Steve Gibson, but I find Steve to have a voice and personality that just gets on my nerves after a few episodes. (No offense to Steve, I’ve never meet him.)

I’ve also found another user for the iPod. Since the device has 30G of storage I’m using it as a backup for the critical documents on my home computer.  I can zip up the files, encrypt and password protect the zip file and then store it on the iPod. Sweet!

Moving to Chicago

14 11 2006

It’s official…well at least the paperwork says it’s official…the family is moving to Chicago.  We have our house up for sale here in Northern Kentucky and I’ll be starting my new job with Neohapsis December 4th.

This was totally volunteer and I’m looking at this as a very good thing. Chicago is a much better market than Cincinnati, should I want to continue and grow in my career of Information Security. It’s one of those markets that if I don’t like what I’m doing in the future I can pretty easily find another job…maybe not the perfect job…but a job none the less.

Chicago is also a better base for storm chasing than Cincinnati, and I will be living within a short drive (30min at most?) of the College of DuPage which has an active meteorological department and storm chasing group.

And since this isn’t all about me…my wife likes the Chicago area for what it has to offer as a region/city, the school are very good generally and many of the neighborhoods where we will be looking to live are in the best in the country.

The only real downside I can see is the harsher winters.  Snow doesn’t scare me so I have no issues moving further north, but it does impact my other hobby of backyard farming a little bit.  I’ll have a shorter growing season by a few days and more severe weather (generally).

Here’s to hoping the current house sells soon!
