Water as a cold frame heat sink
21 12 2007
I happened to be out taking pictures of the family making a snow man and took the opportunity to snap a couple pictures of the garden in winter. Man is it ugly.
You can see the 3×8 (roughly) cold frame still hanging in there. I’m having problems getting a steady signal from the wireless temperature gauge in the cold frame. I think it’s due to temperature/humidity so I’ve purchased an ultra-cold sensor that should take care of it once it gets here.
A recent addition to the cold frame has been the water jugs you can see in one of the pictures. I’m using the left over soda and milk jugs and filling them with tap water and a splash of bleach to stop any growths. It looks like they are adding a good 2 or 3 degrees of heat carry over in the evening. So if I can get the rest of the cold frame insulated I may have a fairly good season extender. Possibly an extra month on either end of the growing season.
In another couple months I’ll have enough water jugs that I think I’m going to build a basic shelf inside the cold frame so I can run two rows of water jugs inside for twice as much heat sink.
