I'm happy for you!
I'm like that about my RAV ... always wanted one and finally got it. Couldn't afford a new one, so I am not having to deal with all the current Toyota problems. I love my RAV! It's green, too ... jewel green!

i thought of a few more thoughts here..

you will need a sugar feeder right away. when you hive the package, the bees will be without any food supplies nor any honeycomb. they have a lot of work to do rigth away, and you need to provide them with food until they get the hive set up.

as soon as you hive the package and put on the supers, put the sugar feeder on top of the super. drizzle a little of the sugar syrup down into the supers so the bees can follow it up to the feeder.

there are many styles of sugar feeders, and i've found you will get some drowned bees in your feeder. ( bees can't swim )
When you are pouring the syrup into the feeder, you will get some bees flying around you and some may land in the syrup. lift them out with your hive tool.

the top mount sugar feeders with wood floaters in them work best, i've found. i don't have these kind, and i get drowned bees when i use the feeder.

for honey extraction, we borrow an extractor from a beekeeper in a nearby town. you'll only use this a few times a year, and if a neighbor already has one, ask. its proper to return the extractor cleaned, and with a jar of your honey.

"primarily due to the “green movement”. Nothing wrong with that…at least something good is coming out of it."

love that one.

we just finished our first year of beekeeping, and here's what i've learned:

• the hand crafted hive parts are not necessary. all my woodenware is from a supplier and it is all good and works well. the bees will use propolis to seal up any gaps they dont like, and they will use it to coat all sorts of stuff inside the hive. i think the most important thing is to paint them well. don't paint the insides of the hive bodies.

• the assembly of all this is easy, it just takes time. a nail gun or brad nailer is handy.

• you don't need the heavy duty gloves. I use those blue nitrile gloves, they allow you to have much better feel, and i have not been stung thru the gloves. car mechanics use these gloves. a friend of mine has those big gloves, and after he worked with me once and saw the blue gloves, he now uses them.

• instead of a separate veil and coveralls, i'd suggest a veil jacket combo, and the round veils have better visibility, no blind spots.

• for people who want to come watch, i have a few simple mosquito veils you can buy at camping stores. this allows people to stand right at the hive and watch. the visitors need to wear long sleeve shirts and tuck their pants into their socks, just like i do when i work the hive. Your visitors, or family are not going to get stung unless they do something to aggravate the bees, like step on them. ( i have done this )

• i use all medium supers, or hive bodies, which are the 6 5/8 height ones. The regular supers, or hive bodies, are real heavy when they are full of bees, pollen, brood, and honey. I have a back injury, and even the mediums, when full of honey are quite heavy.
for the brood, i use 3 medium supers in place of the 2 large supers.

• plastic frame foundation is one of those things that people have many opinions about. I use wax foundation for the brood supers, and plastic foundation for the honey supers. This system has worked well.

• i suggest a screened bottom board with a wood slide that can be put under the screen, this allows mite counts and allows you to close up the hive in winter. You want some air flow, but the wood slide will allow that.

just my 2 cents here, others will have completely different thoughts.. thx, eric.

Hi - very good web site you have established. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to publish a remark to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically sweet. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed working with computers and am attempting to learn code in my free time (which there is never enough of lol).

I did it last year. It worked great. I built two of the big rubbermaid tubs.....But you can also make single plant SIP's out of food grade 5 gallon buckets. I got the wicking pots from Brew and Grow in Roselle (It is a hydroponic/Beer brewing shop) on Irving Park Rd. I get my buckets from a local Hot Dog stand. The whole thing ends up costing under 2.50 a pot. You can add Cages on top to the lids for another 5 bucks. I had 10 going last year with peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers growing from them. They all did great. I will send you some pics to your email. I am making about 10 more this year because they worked so well and they were much cheaper.

I too purchased a $99 2 night stay in WI Dells and I am interested to see how my sales presentation will go. I was told by a salesman at Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee IL that I would not be asked to buy anything and I would only be told about the "membership" program if I asked. The 90 min tour is to get me familiar with all the attractions at the resort so I will tell all my friends and family. He also told me that the reason behind this sweet deal is to make sure we have a good time and thus return to the resort and pay regular prices. I will repost after my little vacation to let you all know how it goes.

You're the second blogger this week that I read that was at one point thinking of not growing tomatoes next year. I wonder how many people make that resolution during the winter only to be tempted by seed catalogs and plant sales in the spring to break it.

I'm probably not going to try to grow any in my garden since they did so poor. Although, I think I will grow some again next year in the community garden where they did so well.

I'll have to bookmark Royal Oak Farm Orchard for next year. Apple picking is one of those things I'd like to expose my nephews and niece to. I have a very, very, very vague memory of doing it once as a kid.

Cheers.

who wouldn't bring warm clothes to Chicago in October? A winter coat would not be inappropriate, nor would rain gear.

I guess I do rave on the meat items! I didn't really notice if they had vegan or veggie specific items. They do have a local farmers market roasted vegetable plater that probably has whatever is in season. It does include goat cheese which may not be an option for you. Also a baby eggplant dish with mozzarella. We had the grilled sweet corn and tomato bruschetta which would work for veggie and it was very good. I also see they have a hummus starter.

They are on twitter as GlenPrairie. If you are into twitter you could drop a note and ask!

Do you recall them having any interesting vegetarian entries? Your posts are mostly raving about the venison, bison, and bacon... but wondering if it would be appealing to us local veggies and vegans.

I have only started seeing them in my yard for the last 2-3 weeks. Last year we had an insane amount, so compared to that this summer is relatively quiet. Although my roses are all dead so maybe that's why they're bugging someone else. ;)

I can't picture our mower's handles (a push mower too) because that's my hubbie's job (he doesn't like the way I cut the grass). I guess the ergonomics was an after thought on it?

Where are you in Wheaton? North Side or South side? We're northsiders, near the train tracks.

We've gone a couple times and I can't agree more with your pro/con list up there. We had a couple friends who were playing rugby and had a blast watching the matches/tournaments, but the vendor tents were pbbblt for sure (this was maybe 3 years ago?). I remember the last time we went to the fest-thing at Gaelic Park the vendor selection was awkward ( set up in a looong row of tents with a couple of "L" bends , enough room for one person to walk between tent wall and table) but there was a good variety of vendors and such. Irish not Scottish, but, you know, not entirely dissimilar on some of the stuff.

I used to help a lady in her garden by mowing her lawn. She had a push mower that looked like something out of the 1800's but it darn if it didn't work like a charm.

I used to own a very old push mower with a handle that ended in a t-bar (like a bicycle handle) and was adjustable for height. Even so, mowing with it at first took effort. Eventually, mowing with it was not too bad but not to the friends who often thought they could do it. They did not realize that it took a while to make it look easy!

I am surprised that they designers of the mower did not take height into consideration and supplied an adjustable handle.

I didn't make it this year - it was just too crazy (which is sad because we always go no matter what) -- BUT -- those line are insane! Worse than ever. I don't think I ever got there 45 min in advance. Maybe 20-25 tops. It looks like you scored some nice plants - what did ya get?

First off...what are you looking to buy and how far north of the city? If it's plants and you're not looking for anything exotic then the cheapest place will be one of the big box stores like Lowes, Menards, Home Depot. If you don't like that option then you'll have to pay more for what you buy. I have not found a low cost/high quality garden store in the area.

I know of one garden center north of the city that comes to me very well recommended...

Meinke’s Garden Center on Touhy Ave. in Niles, IL

Help! I want to help my daughter plant her garden this spring. She lives North of the city and I would like to find a good garden center that does not charge and arm and a leg! Last year I was shocked by the prices. Any recommendations?

Yes yes...and if we all moved to Costa Rica we could garden all year round. I won't be returning to live in SoCal anytime soon if at all. I'd consider the Sierra Nevada mountains, but that's about it.

Lowe's has a great shed that is also a solar greenhouse. I had it installed by Lowe's and it was built in an afternoon. I think it was around $2000 but it was money well spent. I do need to install a solar fan because if I'm not home to open the door on a sunny spring day it can get up to 100 degrees inside. Also I bought some shade cloth for the windows from Heinz Brother's in St. Charles.

I love the APS system as well. I'm gone at least 3 days a week as a flight attendant and I couldn't start seeds without the APS to do my watering when I'm gone.

Just to let you know....Gardeners supply has the APS systems at half off right now....so if you wanted to pick up a couple more for cheap...now would be the time.

I have been using the Park Seed plug system but I just picked up a 40 cell APC. for 10.00 one can't go wrong. I was placing an order with them for the row cover anyway so adding the APC system allowed me to use a 15% off coupon CNB83002 for purchases over 25$.

The row cover I got off the internet at some random farm supply company. A google search will turn up several vendors of "bug netting" or "row cover" fabric. I can't recall where I bought what I have now.

Just to let you know. Menards has a self watering system by planters pride for under $5.00
28 - 2 1/2" pots in a self watering tray. I am using them for transplants from the Park Seed Bio-Seed tubes...but they might work for you to start seeds too.

Also...Where did you get your row cover material? I never got around to cutting up that piece you loaned me so i am looking to buy some to use on the raised beds this spring.

Hi! I just saw your site. I live in Glendale Heights, so we're practically neighbors. Love the raised beds! I am pretty much garden-obsessed, though I currently live in a condo with just a small patio to work with. I do have a community garden plot, though!

That's an option I've thought about as well. My kids love worms. They are my worm hunters when I'm out in the garden. I yell WORM SIGN like in the movie Dune and they come running to look at them and collect a couple for their worm farm made out of a small plastic tub.

I can see the appeal and usefulness of these.

An indoor red worm composter is another option, and it's so much cheaper - worms and a plastic container with a lid are all it takes.

I completely agree! I grew looseleaf last year but we eat so few salads (not a good thing) I didn't need it to come again. That and Melissa dislikes leaf lettuce and thus requested a head/crispy veriety and/or spinach.

be interested in how the head lettuce works for you. i have always preferred cut and come again lettuces; they seem to be a more efficient use of space.

Hello,

Great website. I hope to have my first garden in the Chicagoland area this year. I am transplant from Tennessee, so Zone 5 is new.

I am interested in the cold frame in flickr pics. Did you build this cold frame or is it a kit. ( I am really hoping it is a kit) If it is a kit, can you please share where you purchased it or the brand of the kit. It look nice and functional.

P.S. I am also looking through the Fedco seeds catalog to put together my order. I haven't had a garden in 4 years so I am excited.

Thanks

Not really. Especially if you have to pay for the shipping. For example...if I buy 2.5 pound of potatoes from Moose Tubers it costs $16.50 ($10+ shipping). I doubt I'll get $20 worth of potatoes out of that. I'll add this to my diary notes for this year and see if I can track reasonable costs. I plan to purchase potatoes from a local source to cut the costs.

Do you get enough potatoes to make it worth the trouble? Or is this one of those things that we grown folks plant more for the benefit of kids and the cool factor?

Yes still taking transit. But I didn't realize where I was parking in Wheaton was a leased lot and got a $15 ticket (signage is horrible). Now I have to pay $1.25 a day to park until I can get a leased permit from Wheaton for $60/quarter (6 month waiting list even though the lot is never full). Still cheaper than driving though.

Woot!!! yay transit! I take the CTA every day from my house in Forest Park to my office in the loop, so I"m a big advocate for transit. But then again, I am also a transit planner by profession so I'm hardly a neutral party. I'm glad the train is working out for you! Now that gas prices are back down compared to what they were back in Oct, are you still taking transit?
